Gaywood Valley Archaeological & Historical Project

Events Programme

Here is a list of the events planned for the Gaywood Valley Archaeological and Historic Project (GVAHP) during 2013. Normally each event will have some associated training to allow members of the local community to be able to participate, but the first events have a large element of training and familiarisation with the achaeological process. In addition to members of the West Norfolk and Kings Lynn Archaeological Society on hand to offer help and assistance we also plan to have to have a university tutor available to offer expert advice and examine any finds that may be made.

We welcome members of the public who would like to partisipate but if you just want to come along and see what we are doing, then that is fine too!

Archaeology Events

16th February - Gaywood

Dr Bond discusses a Pottery fragment with a member of the local community

Public introduction event in conjunction with the Gaywood Valley Society. Members of the West Norfolk & King's Lynn Archaeology Society were there to talk to local Gaywood residents about exploring their heritage and the events planned for 2013. There was also a 'hands on' display of artefacts from past investigations which the community could handle and examine.

The day was well attended and we were able to chat to lots of famililes from the local area about our activities and how they could take part. The children were particularly interested in handling the various ancient objects that we had brought with us.

19th February - Pott Row

Society member Mim Medlar talks to a member of the public about the archaeology of the area and what the archaeology project hope to do during 2013

An Artefact Workshop held at Pott Row in conjunction with the Gaywood Valley project on 19th February 2013 with members of the Kings Lynn Archaeological Society showing Iron Age pottery and other items discovered locally. The aim of the workshop was to give the public the opportunity to handle historic artefacts from the local area and encourage them to take part in the archaeological events planned for later in the year.

    Dr Clive Bond

At True's Yard, Kings Lynn starting at 11am

Started work cleaning the artefacts discovered in the test pits/shovel test pits due when in the Hall Grounds, Church Paddock and Crown Inn grounds at Gayton. These included a number of flint artefacts, medieval Jetons, a Roman coin and a number of animal bones

The first part of the work was to wash off the mud and clay adhering to the finds and then to let them dry. When they were dry we sorted the finds into their types (still keeping them in their original context!) and examined them in more detail.

    18th/19th May - Gaywood

    Carenza Lewis

Digging three test pits in the Queen Elizabeth playing field very close to the Gaywood River. Although the surface soil was easy to dig we soon came upon a thick clay layer that extended down almost a meter. At the bottom of this was a gray silty clay that conatined some evidence of past occupation including burnt flint 'pot-boilers'. Unfortunately at this level we were close to the water table and so we were only able to dig into this soil 15cm or so until water started to seep into the pit.
