Gayton 16th March
The first training day organised by the society was in Gayton. The spot chosen was the area of land, set to pasture, just South of the Churchyard of St Nicholas. This area featured a number of 'Lumps and Bumps' that could indicate sub-surface features from the past. The study was carried out on a cold day in March and there were a number of significant finds.
The activities covered were:-
- Setting up a survey grid
- Digging and recording a Test pit
- Digging and recording Shovel test pits (a much quicker and more limited version of a test pit)
The results from the society's first training event, which was test pitting in Gayton, can be seen HERE
